Six Ancient Kilns Pilgrimage. ❶ Onward to TOKONAME
Ancient Rainy Homestead “Dokanzaka” [Clay Pipe Hill]
Old kilns and Tokoname, dating back to the Heian period.
These narrow hilly paths are records of the time when, during the Meiji era of cultural enlightenment, the majority of Japan’s clay pipes were manufactured here.
In ancient times, this area was the main producer of medieval pottery. Countless numbers of wonderful vases and jars have since been created here, and it was discovered through excavations that the area was of high importance during its prime.
Rain is romantic when walking Tokoname.
Stairs and hilly pathways are numerous among the pottery workshops. Tokoname is a prime example.
At one time a clay pipe factory, today it is a gallery, greeting travelers with an aura of serenity.
The vestiges of its industry days can be felt all around. Pieces by modern artists are displayed, adding color.
The rain is lovely, but strolls on a sunny afternoon are lovely, as well. Narrow pathways are particularly lovely.
Back to the hilly path, and around the corner of the chimney, there is a shop. I purchase an unglazed reddish-brown clay, large-sized sake cup and decide to enjoy some sake in the evening.
